Portia Appel, DVM graduated from Iowa State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in 2004.  After completing a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery in Northern California she returned to Iowa in 2006; she joined the AERCCI full-time in 2007. Dr. Appel is a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and the American Animal Hospital Association(AAHA).. She and her husband enjoy horseback riding, hiking, and traveling. They have two dogs and a horse.

Karl Bolser, DVM graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990.  He has been working at the AERCCI ever since.  He started working at Iowa State teaching freshman veterinary students in 2000.  He is currently instructor in charge of Clinical Foundations and Case Studies I.  He also teaches both of the anatomy classes.  Dr. Bolser is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Greater Des Moines Veterinary Association (GDMVA) and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS).

 

Dave Janssen, DVM graduated from the University of  Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 1994.  After four years in private practice, he joined the AERCCI in 1998.  Dr. Janssen is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS).  His special interests include soft-tissue surgery.  He and his wife have three children plus a cat, two hamsters, and three goldfish.

Denise Mankin, DVM is a graduate of Iowa State University in Veterinary Medicine in 1990.  After ten years of private practice she joined the AERCCI in 2000.  Dr. Mankin is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Greater Des Moines Veterinary Medical Association (GDMVMA) and the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS).  Her passions include roller blading, biking, hiking and music. She also raises and shows Bouvier des Flandres.

Derek Nestor, DVM, ACVIM,  joined the AERCCI in 2005 as the staff internist. He spent two years in a general practice in the Des Moines area following his 1999 graduation from Iowa State University. He has since completed a one-year internship at the University of Illinois and a two-year residency at Michigan State University.  Dr. Nestor achieved Diplomate status in the Specialty of Internal Medicine in the American College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and comes to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center from a private referral practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Brent Reimer, DVM, ACVS joined the AERCCI in 2007 as the staff surgeon. He achieved Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2003. Dr. Reimer attended the University of Iowa where he majored in biology and botany. He received his DVM degree from Iowa State University in 1999 and subsequently performed a one-year small-animal internship at Michigan State University. He next completed a three-year residency in small-animal surgery at the University of California, Davis. Following his residency, he served on the faculty of Iowa State University for approximately three years.
